When a pipeline breaks at sea or the needs to repair vessels, the underwater welder enters paper as an auxiliary service. In Panama, there are specialized companies to perform this kind of services.
After an investigation about this profession, we have been able to identify the existence of two current methodologies used to perform the work of an underwater welder. Today we show you the two most used methods in this business.
Welding in humid environments
They are made with a power source between 300 and 400 amps. In this process, the arc of the welding is protected and the process is maintained with a safety system that interrupts the electricity every time the machine is not being used. It is possible to perform this type of process in depths between 60 to 182 meters, an important aspect is that these types of practices are very flexible to use with a low cost. Now, its quality is very poor, the welder in the process tends to have difficulty in visibility and causes porosity effects on the material.
Hyperbatical welding
It is also considered dry welding under water. This type of welding requires a compartment that keeps the welding area protected, with controlled pressure and constant monitoring of the welder’s condition. Although in this type of practices are more expensive and require much larger and sophisticated equipment, in matters of safety and quality is a great option for very important repairs.
